Louisiana's Brown Pelican
Few have the beauty and grace of the Brown Pelican. The endangered species thrives in Louisiana's coastal waters. Queen Bess Island, located in Barataria Bay just east of Grand Isle, is a nesting colony for the Louisiana Brown Pelican.

Birding
Jefferson is among the best bird watching regions in the nation. Bird enthusiasts will delight in the great number of species that grace the landscape. In fact, Queen Bess Island off the coast of Grand Isle is the nesting site for the once almost extinct brown pelican, Louisiana's state bird.
Another interesting bird sanctuary is that of the purple martin. Year after year, they flock to the beautiful shores of Lake Pontchartrain for their annual nesting ritual. The Expressway Commission has dedicated a location along the south shore of Lake Pontchartrain for observation.
As you explore the walking trails of the Barataria Preserve at Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve you will see the Swamp Sparrow, Brown-headed Cow Bird, Boat-tailed Grackle, and Red-winged Black Bird to name a few. For information on birds sighted or to report birds sighted in the Preserve visit http://www.nps.gov/jela/barataria-preserve.htm.
