Heading out to Grand Isle? If your plans include a trip across the LA 1 Bridge in Leeville, make sure you're prepared. The toll is in effect for all vehicles driving southbound across the bridge. There are no toll booths on the bridge, but there are several other ways to make it easy to pay the toll. Go online to www.geauxpass.com and purchase your Single-Trip GeauxPass with your Visa or MasterCard. Or stop by the Customer Service Center at 1821 South Alex Plaisance Blvd. (Hwy. 3235) to pay with cash, credit or debit. You can also stop at one of several kiosks in the area. To view all the kiosk locations or the toll rate chart, visit the GeauxPass Web site. Remember, Visa or MasterCard are the only credit cards accepted - no American Express or Discover cards, please. Forgot or missed paying the toll? If you missed or could not pay the toll while crossing over the LA1 bridge you have a period of 96 hours to stop in at the Customer Service Center or to call the center's toll free number to pay the toll in order to avoid receiving a fine.

Town of Grand Isle

On behalf of myself, elected officials and residents of the Town of Grand Isle, we are inviting everyone to visit our beautiful town. In the past years, we have welcomed tens of millions of visitors to participate in the fun activities that our community has to offer. The fish are always biting and fresh seafood is caught daily. The beautiful beach offers a clean atmosphere for family fun. The Butterfly Dome or our walking trails for touring are also a great way to view some of our exotic creatures in flight. We are always hoping for great weather, so bring your fishing poles, cameras and sunscreen for a fun filled visit. We are certain that you will enjoy your stay and please visit us again soon.

Town of Grand Isle, an overview
At the Southern end of Highway 1, the seven magical miles of Grand Isle hold all the wonders that Louisiana nature can offer. Oleander and crepe myrtle, palms, ferns and windblown oak trees on Cheniere ridges welcome migrating birds in season. The marshes teem with aquatic life and water birds. On Grand Isle, time slows and the visitor can savor a unique Louisiana experience.

Europeans came to Grand Isle with Spanish land grants, and by the early 1800s there were active sugar and cotton plantations. But it was as a recreation spot that Grand Isle gained fame, as visitors from nearby New Orleans enjoyed the breezes and seawater while staying in early hotels. Writers Kate Chopin of "The Awakening" and Lafcadio Hearn of "Chita" both used the atmosphere of Grand Isle as a setting for nineteenth century fiction. Today's visitors find a thriving seaside community with petroleum and seafood industries as well as everything the visiting sportsman, tourist or camper could want.

The State of Louisiana maintains a mile of beachfront at Grand Isle State Park on the easternmost end of the island. The park looks out toward nearby Grand Terre island, once the lair of the legendary pirate (or smuggler, if you choose) Jean Lafitte and site of the ruins of U.S. Army Fort Livingston. Grand Isle State Park has a 400-foot long public fishing pier with a nearby fish-cleaning station. State officials say that over 280 species of fish are known to live in the waters around this sandy spur. The camping area of the park can accommodate up to 100 families or groups with nearby bathhouses with running water and an adjacent dump station.
